Red Squirrel Surveys

The distribution of red squirrel has declined dramatically in the last 50 years and it is now restricted to northern England and Scotland and a few isolated populations in southern England. Red squirrels are legally protected in the UK and so developments with the potential to affect them must be surveyed and assessed.

Where suitable woodland habitat is present within their known range, surveys should be undertaken to determine their likely presence or absence. The scope of surveys will depend on the scale of a development and the habitats affected, and may range from visual surveys to more detailed surveys using nest tubes or camera traps.

Our ecologists are able to design and conduct appropriate surveys and consult with the relevant authorities, as well as develop suitable mitigation.
